GOOD FIRST USE
Draft, organize, or rephrase
- Rewrite a non-sensitive note.
- Turn your own public text into an outline.
- Brainstorm questions to research yourself.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
WORKING DEFINITION
An AI model is software that uses patterns learned from examples to generate, classify, or predict. A chatbot may use a model to produce the next part of a response. Another model might label an image or estimate a number.
An AI system is the larger arrangement around the model: the application you use, its instructions, the information it can reach, any tools it can operate, and the people who review or act on its output. Two applications can use the same model and still behave differently because the rest of their systems differ.
The model does not understand or establish truth in the way a person does. It can produce a fluent answer from incomplete, outdated, or mistaken patterns. Access to a search tool or document can help, but it does not remove the need to inspect sources and check important facts.
ONE-SENTENCE VERSION
An AI system is a model plus the software, information, tools, instructions, and human decisions that turn an input into an action or result.
TASK SELECTION
A useful first task has clear source material, a result you can compare, and no serious consequence if the first draft is poor. Use the three lanes below before entering anything into an AI service.
GOOD FIRST USE
CHECK CAREFULLY
DO NOT DELEGATE
WORKED EXAMPLE
The task is to make a note more polished without changing its facts. The display below is a fixed lesson example. It does not contact an AI service and does not accept input.
REQUEST
Rewrite this as a short, polite email. Keep the days and times exactly as written. Do not add a reason or make new commitments.
ORIGINAL NOTE
Hi Pat. I cannot cover Tuesday 3–5. I can work Thursday 10–noon. Please confirm. —Lee
ILLUSTRATIVE DRAFT
Subject: Shift change request
Hi Pat,
I cannot cover Tuesday from 3–5. I can work Thursday from 10–noon instead. Please confirm whether that works.
Thanks,
Lee
PAUSE
The note is low-stakes, contains no password or private record, and will be reviewed before it is sent.
CHECK
It is short and polite. It did not invent a reason, a date, a link, or a commitment.
VERIFY
Compare the draft with the original note: Tuesday 3–5, Thursday 10–noon, Pat, and Lee are all present.
| Original fact or limit | Draft check | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot cover Tuesday, 3–5 | Present and unchanged | PASS |
| Available Thursday, 10–noon | Present and unchanged | PASS |
| No reason supplied | No reason invented | PASS |
| Pat receives it; Lee sends it | Both names are correct | PASS |
YOUR TURN
You may practice on paper, in a document, or with an AI service you already use. This Silver Signal page does not receive your note.
Team — the meeting is Friday at 2 p.m. in Room 4. Bring the printed checklist. The meeting should take 20 minutes.
Rewrite the note as a clear, friendly reminder. Preserve every fact. Do not add names, links, dates, or promises. Put any uncertainty under the heading NEEDS CHECKING.
KNOWLEDGE CHECK
Say or write your answer first. Then use the “Show answer” control to compare it with the lesson answer.
1. What is the difference between a model and an AI system?
A model is the pattern-producing software. An AI system includes the model plus the application, instructions, data or tools, people, and review process around it.
2. Which is safer for a first use: rewriting a non-sensitive note or deciding whether to change a prescription?
Rewriting the non-sensitive note. It is low-stakes, the facts are easy to compare, and a person can review the draft before using it. A prescription decision requires a qualified medical professional.
3. What should you do if the result changes a time, name, amount, or other fact?
Do not use the result as written. Correct it, check the full draft again, and verify important facts against the original source.
4. Should a password, access code, medical record, or private family message be pasted into a general AI service?
No. Leave sensitive information out unless you understand the service's data rules and have explicit permission to use it for that information. Passwords and access codes should never be pasted into a prompt.
